Therapies

Did you know there is no one-size-fits-all treatment program for every type of addiction? It’s true. The one-size-fits-all approach does not work because every individual in need of treatment is a different person. Middlegate Addiction Help understands this, which is why we work with facilities and programs all over the country offering a variety of therapies.

Different Drug and Alcohol addiction therapies are appropriate for different circumstances. That being said, while there are dozens of available therapies out there, they can all be categorised under one of the following:

1. Detox

When an addiction is related to some sort of chemical like drugs or alcohol, one of the most important first steps is the detox process. Detox is a therapy in which the addict is broken of his or her dependence on a substance by separating them from that substance for an extended amount of time.

Sometimes detox is accomplished cold turkey, with no medical intervention whatsoever. This is certainly the quickest way to detox, but not always the safest most effective way. When caregivers deem it appropriate, drugs can be used to lessen the impact of withdrawal symptoms and increase patient safety.

2. Rehab

Where detox handles the physical addiction, rehab is designed to handle the mental and emotional addictions. Moreover, because the mental and emotional aspects of addiction can be much more powerful than their physical counterparts can, rehab tends to take significantly longer than detox.

The best rehab programs are residential programs that separate the addict from their comfortable surroundings. Separation from those surroundings makes it that much easier to conquer addiction.

3. Support

Detox and rehab would not do much good in the long term without proper support. That’s why any good program includes group support and counselling. By being able to interact with other addicts struggling with the same things, the individual finds strength in the knowledge that he or she is not alone. What’s more, all of the addicts in a given group can provide both accountability and encouragement to the others.

Support can also be found by way of one-on-one counselling. This counselling can be part of a residential treatment program or one of the components offered by an outpatient program. There are even charities in the UK offering support groups dealing with various addictions.

4. Aftercare

No detox or rehab therapy is complete without aftercare. The therapies provided by aftercare include ongoing counselling, group support, emergency hotline assistance, and so on. These therapies are designed to be put into play after the initial treatment program has been completed. The purpose of aftercare is to prevent relapse as often as possible.
